How (not) to: engage with your customers!

So I was busy writing some emails this afternoon and up popped an email in my inbox from a design/development company informing of their services. Not only was this an unsolicited email, it was also an impersonal and mass-generated one. However, the company behind the marketing campaign seemed legitimate.

This got me thinking about why in 2012, in an age in which people are supposed to be increasingly connected through social media, why are companies still putting out blanket marketing/advertising campaigns? Particularly when marketers are among the first people to talk about “engagement”.

What does engagement mean in a social media context? How do you put it into practice? Check out my video for my take on this topic. Clearly, there’s more than one answer to these questions. I’d love to hear what engagement means for you.
